Charles Hawes 是1922年第一屆紐伯瑞獎的得主，他在1923年《The Dark Frigate》出版後就去世了，他的太太在他身後代他領獎時說：「... with 《The Dark Frigate》what I only know how much he wanted to make a contribution, however small, to the truth that shall set us all free... Is fact the only truth? Does not imagination - the seeing eye - sometimes strike for beyond fact, to the very heart of truth?」真是道盡他短短34年一生的生命和創作真諦。Carl (他的朋友們稱呼他)為人真誠熱情，打從心底生出的笑容讓人喜歡和他親近 (除了被邀請和他一起去散個十幾二十英哩的步時)；創作作品時考證詳實周延，給故事增添有如真實歷史的場景氛圍，但又創造出一場場想像的滔天巨浪、驚險的海盜劫掠來挑戰書中少年主角的勇氣和信念。
他和太太結褵七年，生下兩個兒子，從孩子小的時候就唸詩給他們聽：「Do they understand? ... Probably not, though how do we know? At least they love the rocking rhythms. And if they learn the whole music of it now, later they will come into their inheritance.」是啊，就算他們聽不懂內容，但是父親唸出音律，會永遠留在他們的記憶裡，更何況是被抱在懷裡的溫度和觸感啊！
