原來是精通各國語言的學者，沒打算當作家，更別說是兒童文學作家。不過機緣難料，40多歲時在波士頓認識了 James Marshall 這一位好朋友，契合的友誼讓他們一起創作《The Stupids Step Out》《Miss Nelson is Missing》等系列，和其他非常受歡迎的繪本，直到 James Marshall 過世，一共合作了12本。
